Commander’s Corner
Wow how time flies! Another month has passed and I am running late for the newsletter.  I want to thank all those who have paid their 2011 dues.  We have had a great response so far.  If you haven't sent in your dues, please do so.  I would also like to ask everyone to try to bring in a new member.  Last month, we had three members transfer in and one new member apply.
If you have applied for but not received your Louisiana Honor Medal, they can be picked up at the Louisiana Veteran Service Office at the courthouse here in Lake Charles.  If you haven't applied for one yet, you can apply online or talk to me or Bill Abshire and we will help you get an application in.
The Veterans Administration has new rules for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) claims.  If you have applied to VA in the past and were rejected for lack of a stressor, you are urged to reapply.  If you have any questions about how or where to apply or regarding the qualifications, call 275-0707.
I will be attending the Department Executive Committee Training to be held in Lafayette on August 6th - 8th.
Post 1 will be hosting a Family Day for the 156th Battalion Family Readiness Group on August 8th from 10 am to 2 pm.  All are invited to show our support for the deployed troops and their families.  A meal will be served.
I would like to thank all of our officers and E-Board members for their support.  This is a team effort.
Please remember to recruit a new member.

Is everyone ready for fall and Cooler days?  I sure am!  Things have been slow in July but we are read to get back in the work mode.

I have set a membership goal of November 30, 2010, so please send in your $15.00 dues ASAP.  At National Convention in August they may raise the dues but we will keep ours at $15.00 as long as we can.  If you have a junior please remember they do not get a bill but you can pay their $4.00 with your dues.  Just put their name on the check.

Pris is Chairman of a project for the Veterans Home In Jennings.  She is trying to get a corner shelf made for each Veteran's room.  She has someone making them for $50.00 each.  If you would like to buy one, we will put a plaque on it in memory of your soldier.  For information call Pris at 477-9962.  This is a very worthwhile project.  The D.E.C. meeting is Saurday, August 7th in Lafayette.  Most of the officers and board members are planning on going.

The National Convention is in Milwaukee, WI the end of  August.  I will be a state delegate.  Sue and Connie are also alternates.  We are looking forward to bringing back some new and exciting things.  If anyone has suggestions for projects or fun things, let me know at 274-9436.

A hero isn't someone with great speed or strength.  Nor someone in great power.  A hero is someone who stands up for the old; the small; the weak.  A hero is someone who defends those who can't defend themselves. A hero is someone willing to die for their country so that his friends, family, and neighbors can be free.  He does this willingly, without thought and without regret.  A hero is our Sons; Our Daughters; Our Fathers; Our Mothers; Our Husbands; Our Wives; Our Brothers; Our Sisters;  Our Hero's are our Soldiers.

May God Bless You All

Good to Know
In the July 2010 issue of the Thrive, magazine for better living as article titled:  "Older Adults Feel the Heat" they tell us that "When the temperature reaches 90 degrees and is combined with high humidity, the risks to older people increase.  This is because their ability to sense heat is impaired and because older people generally have poor circulation.
Additionally, many older people take meds with diuretics, which remove salt and fluid volume from the body.  Older adults should avoid being outside in southwest LA between 10am - 5 pm which is the hottest time of the day, during the summer.  Drinking six, eight-ounce glasses of fluid each day will help prevent dehydration."
So Legionnaires, let's watch out for our older friends and stay cool this summer!

Adjutant Notes:
We have started off this year with a great start in 2011 renewals.  As of this letter we have posted 178 renewals.  I want to personally thank and welcome to Post 1 all our new members and invite them to our regular meeting on August 11th to enjoy a wonderful meal, and meet other members and learn more about Post 1 activities during the meeting.  I am sad to report however that 29 members will be terminated for nonpayment of their 2010 dues.  The Post Bingo is doing great, a financial statement will be given at the August E-Board meeting and on the regular meeting on the 11th.  If any of you out there would like to win some money and you like playing Bingo, I cordially invite you to come to any or all our sessions.  Sessions are 11 am - 2 pm on Fridays, 1p - 4 p on Saturdays, and 7p - 10p on Mondays.   This past Saturday, one of our players won the progressive jackpot on 48 numbers and instantly became $9,200.00 richer.  It could be you next, so come out and join us.  We have a very courteous, friendly and helpful staff of workers who will welcome you.
